Are you ready to make a profit off of your unwanted items around the house? Well it can be done with a web business of your own. It can be fun as well as rewarding. There are literally thousands of different types of businesses and things to sell on the internet. The big question for you, the new internet business owner, is what the heck do I sell? The correct answer is: anything customers will buy. This isn’t really as dumb as it sounds. Let’s look at this from a different perspective. As an internet business owner, you are really nothing more than a direct marketer on steroids (the legal kind, of course). What does a direct marketer do? If they use mail marketing, they find a starving market and sell the people in that market what they want. This requires some surveys by mail, or by phone, to see what people will buy. These survey results are divided into demographic groups based on age, gender, marital status, children’s ages, job, income, geographic areas, age of home, age of mortgage, number of vehicles, etc.... Sometimes information can even be taken from public records on driver’s licenses, birth certificates, and postings at the county recorder’s office. The nice thing about modern direct mail marketing is that your list broker usually has the results of all these survey questions. They can sell you a custom list of 100,000 people that will be very likely to buy golf clubs, a new mortgage, invest in the stock market, or custom jewelry. The chances are very high that you are already included in several of these lists, based on how you live your life. Direct marketers sometimes have to convince people in their target market to buy something. This is done by using a special sales letter, personally directed to the person reading it. These letters are very detailed, and draw you in with personal stories and examples. They are usually very interesting to read and can be several pages long. Sales letters are full of emotional benefit statements giving the reader the feeling the product is just right for them. In fact, good sales letters, which include customer testimonials and extra bonuses, can create a strong emotional response that the reader has to have the product right now. Now switch your thinking back to your business on the internet. You have the same ability to find a target market and do market research by using keywords. When a potential client is searching for a product to buy or compare, they search with keywords. Based on your research, you can find the strongest keywords for your product, or in some cases, there will not be enough customer demand for your product. But in either case, you can do all of this in a matter of minutes on the internet, compared to several weeks with mail marketing. If you want to do a survey, but have no customers, then use your internet resources to make a survey. Spend $20 bucks for a Google Adsense campaign with a catchy ad line, like, “this golf driver wins every time,” which takes the survey respondent to your website. On your website, you ask deep, meaningful questions like, “how much would you pay for a golf driver that consistently drives 400 yards?” Responses: $25.... $40.... $50.... $70.... $90. Then follow up with some more earth shattering questions, like, “would you pay extra for a detailed instructional video?” How much extra? $10.... $15.... $20.... $25. Keep going until you have the answers you need. Now you’ve just found your target market. You’ve determined what they want, and how much they are willing to pay for your product. Now it’s up to you to design your website around your product and product keywords to attract your market and help them find you. It’s really no different from the direct marketing techniques used 100 years ago. It’s just updated to a new sales medium, and some rules of the road to use it effectively. As you can see there are many different roads to take toward setting up your e-business. Are you ready to get started making money and having some fun doing it?
